is a close-up view of what was going on behind that tank. The reason
that everyone is crouching down is because the deputies have started
shooting back. At one point, I got up on the steps of the White House because there was a rumor that the deputies were going to send someone out to talk. There were about a dozen other journalists there, and a crowd of several dozen more curious people behind us. |
We
were raked with machine gun fire. I was crouched down near the front,
but had enough warning to throw myself over the side of the steps.
Not everyone else made it. |
